Para reduzir as emissões de gases de efeito estufa na pecuária, a Associação Brasileira das Indústrias Exportadoras de Carnes (Abiec) pretende incentivar os produtores a melhorarem a qualidade dos pastos. Esse procedimento pode reduzir o ciclo de produção de três anos, em média, para até dois anos.

“Pastagens hoje degradadas, que estão com baixíssima produtividade, se receberem um investimento adequado e tratamento de solo, terão o ciclo de produção do gado bastante reduzido, talvez de nove meses a um ano. Com isso melhora a questão ambiental, com menor custo e maior produtividade da nossa pecuária”, afirmou o presidente da Abiec, Roberto Gianetti.

Segundo ele, se o período de engorda do gado for reduzido é possível diminuir em até 30% as emissões de metano geradas durante a digestão dos animais. Para colocar as medidas em prática, Gianetti quer financiamento do Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES) para os pecuaristas.

Outra ação importante, na avaliação do presidente da Abiec, é o rastreamento do gado, desde o nascimento até o abate. De acordo com ele, esse procedimento certifica o local de produção da carne e evita que seja oriunda de áreas de desmatamento, além de garantir a qualidade sanitária, fundamental para a exportação para alguns países. Gianetti acredita que os frigoríficos devem pagar aos produtores pela carne certificada, como forma de incentivo pelo diferencial.

A pecuária foi apontada como responsável pela metade das emissões de gases de efeito estufa no Brasil, segundo pesquisa desenvolvida pela Universidade de Brasília (UnB), pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe) e pela organização não governamental (ONG) Amigos da Terra. O estudo, que considera principalmente o período de 2003 a 2008, mostra que a pecuária emite aproximadamente 1.000 milhões de toneladas (Mton) de gases de efeito estufa por ano, de uma produção total no país de 2.000 a 2.200 Mton anuais.

As três principais fontes de emissões de gases de efeito estufa relacionadas a criação de gado, de acordo com a pesquisa são: o desmatamento para a formação de pastagens, as queimadas de pastagens, e a fermentação entérica do gado (produção de gases durante a digestão).
