Cientistas anunciam mapeamento genético da soja

anunciou o sequenciamento completo do genoma da soja. O estudo, que será publicado nesta quinta, dia 14, na revista Nature, deverá desencadear diversos avanços na manipulação genética da planta.

A soja, uma das mais importantes fontes de proteína e óleo na agricultura global, torna-se a primeira espécie de leguminosa a ter seu genoma sequenciado por completo. O sequenciamento prevê a existência de 46,430 mil genes codificadores de proteínas e permitirá o aperfeiçoamento da produção e o desenvolvimento de variedades mais resistentes a doenças e pragas, dizem pesquisadores.

Segundo os cientistas, será possível acrescentar características associadas aos aspectos nutricionais, como fazer com que a soja seja melhor digerida pelo homem e pelos animais. O trabalho também deverá se tornar referência para a pesquisa genética em outras 20 mil variedades de leguminosas.

O anúncio deverá ter um impacto no Brasil, o segundo maior produtor do grão do mundo.

– Poderemos expandir ainda mais a manipulação genética da soja com outras características que possam agregar valor à cultura. Fato que tem implicação direta na competitividade dessa importante commodity – afirma o geneticista e engenheiro agrônomo Elíbio Rech, da Embrapa.

Decifrar o genoma da soja significa desvendar o mapa genético da leguminosa, as informações que compõem o DNA da planta e sequências de cromossomos. Com essas informações, cientistas poderão trabalhar em laboratório, desenvolvendo novos materiais genéticos de ponta, como variedades mais resistentes a doenças.
