Peixe-boi migra para áreas sem alimento para fugir de predadores

Por meio de rastreamento por rádio, cientistas conseguiram acompanhar a migração sazonal de dez peixes-boi no Amazonas ao longo de 12 anos e mostraram que, na época de seca, a espécie muda de habitat para fugir de predadores, ainda que precise passar fome durante esse período.

Artigo publicado na revista “Journal of Zoology” mostra que no período de maio a junho, quando há mais chuvas e os rios amazônicos enchem, os peixes-bois preferem ficar nas lagoas de várzea, onde encontram mais plantas para comer.

Entre outubro e novembro, no entanto, as águas baixam tanto nessas lagoas que a espécie fica muito ameaçada pelos seus predadores – como os jacarés, as onças e os seres humanos. Por isso, migra para áreas de água mais profundas praticamente sem vegetação aquática que possa comer, o que o leva a jejuar por cerca de metade do ano. A pesquisa foi realizada nas Reservas de Desenvolvimento Sustentável de Mamirauá e Amanã, no oeste do Amazonas.

Os autores concluem que o peixe-boi pode estar mais ameaçado do que se pensava anteriormente, já que a migração regular e a eventual permanência em áreas de águas rasas em busca de comida o tornam vulnerável.

A pesquisa é de autoria de Eduardo Arraut, José Eduardo Mantovani, Evlyn Moraes, do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), Miriam Marmontel, do Instituto Mamirauá, David Macdonald, da Universidade de Oxford, e Robert Kenward, do Centro de Ecologia e Hidrologia de Wallingford, no Reino Unido.
