Mostra em Londres revela o mundo desconhecido dos plânctons

O zoológico de Londres abrigará a partir do dia 16 de fevereiro uma exposição de fotos microscópicas dos plânctons, organismos marinhos que têm quase nenhuma capacidade de locomoção e são a base da cadeia alimentar dos ecossistemas marinhos.

Richard Kirby, pesquisador da Royal Society e autor das fotos, explica que os plânctons são peça-chave na sobrevivência dos oceanos, justamente porque servem de alimento para os seres maiores.

Além disso, são os plânctons que produzem boa parte do oxigênio presente na atmosfera terrestre e que propiciam aquele cheiro característico do mar.

"Plânctons marinhos são os heróis ocultos da vida na Terra, mas poucas pessoas percebem o quão importante eles são e a séria ameaça que eles estão enfrentando por causa do aquecimento global ", disse Kirby à BBC.

Segundo o especialista, como esses seres são muito sensíveis a mudanças na temperatura da superfície do mar, eles sofrem muito com as alterações climáticas.

As fotos dos plânctons permanecerão expostas até o final do ano como parte das comemorações pelo aniversário de 350 anos da Royal Society, a academia inglesa de ciência.

Exposição - O material também fará parte de um livro que o autor pretende publicar em breve. Kirby levou dois anos para fotografar os plânctons encontrados na costa da Inglaterra.

Richard Kirby, professor da Universidade de Plymouth, será também o coordenador de um encontro do projeto Fronteiras da Ciência em São Paulo em agosto deste ano.

Essa iniciativa reúne centros de estímulo à pesquisa do mundo todo com o objetivo de estimular jovens cientistas a colaborar internacionalmente.

A edição de São Paulo do projeto será organizada por uma parceria entre a Royal Society e a Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (Fapesp) e será a primeira do tipo na América do Sul. (Fonte: G1)
