Açudes e águas do São Francisco não amenizarão desertificação do Semiárido, diz diretor do Inpe

Brasília – As mudanças climáticas vão aumentar a vulnerabilidade do processo de desertificação do Semiárido nordestino, disse hoje (9) o diretor do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), Gilberto Câmara. Ele não acredita que a transposição de águas do Rio São Francisco e os açudes conseguirão amenizar o problema da desertificação que tem origem no aquecimento global.

"Há uma tragédia anunciada no mundo e estamos todos perplexos ante a incapacidade de mudar o clima, enquanto os países mais desenvolvidos, que são os mais poluidores da atmosfera, como é o caso dos Estados Unidos, não assumem abertamente compromissos para reduzir os efeitos, mesmo a longo prazo", afirmou. Para Câmara, as regiões polares e tropicais é que vão sofrer as maiores consequências nos próximos anos.

O diretor do Inpe falou durante assinatura de acordo de cooperação entre o instituto e o Ministério do Meio Ambiente, para criação de um sistema de alerta precoce de secas e desertificação no Semiárido nordestino. O sistema vai fazer previsões sobre o clima na região, apontar as probabilidades de uso da terra e prever as variações climáticas. Segundo Gilberto Câmara, o Semiárido é a região do país que merece mais atenção em relação às consequências do aquecimento global.
