Areia das praias de cidades brasileiras pode desaparecer, diz especialista

A escassez progressiva da areia pode fazer com que algumas praias do litoral brasileiro desapareçam do mapa, principalmente em cidades. A afirmação é do geólogo e geógrafo Dieter Muehe para quem os maiores vilões deste fenômeno são o aquecimento global e as ações nocivas do homem ao meio ambiente.

Em entrevista à Agência Brasil, Muehe explicou que as mudanças climáticas estão provocando elevações do nível do mar e tempestades em ritmo acelerado tornando vulneráveis as faixas de areia de muitas praias no país.

“As regiões urbanas são as que correm mais risco, pois geralmente a perda de areia não é reposta naturalmente e a orla sofre maior erosão. Isso já ocorre em várias praias do Rio de Janeiro, como Piratininga, Ipanema e Cabo Frio”.

O estudo foi apresentado na 62ª Reunião Anual da Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC), de 25 a 30 de julho, em Natal.

Embora preocupante, a situação pode ser revertida, explicou o geólogo. “As areias retiradas precisam ser repostas por meio de dragagens com areias idênticas às da praia ou mais grossas”.

Outra solução, segundo o especialista é a exploração de depósitos arenosos na zona submarina, embora seja uma alternativa cara, por já serem usadas pela construção civil ou pela proibição de sua exploração por questões ambientais.

Ele alertou que é fundamental investir em estudos sobre as fontes de sedimentos, com depósito de areia adequado, “além de saber como tirar para não afetar a biologia da área”.

Muehe repete o ditado de que é melhor prevenir do que remediar. “O certo seria adotar faixas de não edificação, conforme previsto por lei, que variam de 50 a 200 metros e assim teremos a um espaço de ajustamento da linha de costa”.

O pesquisador lamentou que este procedimento seja praticamente impossível em áreas urbanizadas. “No Leblon e em Copacabana, por exemplo, não tem jeito. Neste caso compensa o investimento na manutenção de praia de forma artificial. Tem lugares do mundo em que se repõe areia a cada ano em algumas praias, estas precisam ser intensificadas e coordenadas de forma mais eficiente.
