O perigo da extinção ameaça constantemente a biodiversidade do planeta. Para muitos cientistas, são as ações do homem as grandes responsáveis por esse problema. No estudo, “Os riscos de extinção de sapos, rãs e pererecas em decorrência das alterações ambientais”, Vanessa Verdade, Marianna Dixo e Felipe Curcio explicam como o fantasma da extinção ronda também esse grupo de animais. A pesquisa foi publicada na revista Estudos Avançados.

Segundo o estudo, a diversidade de anuros (popularmente conhecidos como sapos, rãs e pererecas) no mundo ultrapassa 5.600 espécies, e o Brasil é considerado atualmente o país que inclui a maior diversidade, abrigando 849 delas. “Estar no topo desse ranking é motivo de orgulho para nós, mas exige muita responsabilidade. Quase 500 das espécies que vivem no país são endêmicas (exclusivas do Brasil). Isso significa que, se alguma delas for extinta, o mundo todo perde parte de sua diversidade”, explicam os autores no estudo.

A pesquisa mostra também que os anuros são um dos grupos de animais mais ameaçados de extinção no mundo – cerca de 30% deles correm risco de desaparecer nos próximos anos – e que desde 1980, 35 espécies já foram extintas na natureza. “Por apresentarem pele fina e permeável e, na maioria dos casos, fase larval que vive em ambiente aquático, esses animais são muito sensíveis a alterações tanto do ambiente aquático como do solo e do ar”, explica a pesquisa.

Os pesquisadores afirmam no artigo que como as áreas naturais estarem cada vez menores, mais alteradas e mais isoladas entre si, muitas espécies deixam de encontrar no ambiente as condições necessárias para sobreviver. “Uma espécie de perereca que deposita ovos nas axilas de bromélias depende dessas para reproduzir. Se as bromélias desaparecerem, não haverá reprodução e a população deixará de existir”, exemplificam.

O estudo ainda mostra os perigos da radiação ultravioleta – que nos anuros atinge os ovos e embriões, prejudicando o desenvolvimento, gerando anomalias e causando problemas no sistema imunológico – e da presença de agentes infecciosos como o Bd – um fungo aquático da família Quitridae, da espécie Batrachochitrium dendrobatidis. “O Bd é considerado atualmente a maior e mais iminente ameaça aos anfíbios nas regiões tropicais”, diz a pesquisa.

Muitos anfíbios são considerados bioindicadores, pois sua pele permeável e o ciclo de vida em ambiente aquático e terrestre são características que os tornam suscetíveis a alterações no ambiente. “A sensibilidade de algumas espécies permite dizer que o ambiente não vai bem quando eles deveriam estar presentes e não estão. Mesmo em áreas em que o ambiente está aparentemente preservado, o desaparecimento de espécies de anfíbios nos diz que existe um problema. A crise é um importante alerta”, encerram.
