A ONU lançou nesta segunda-feira a Década para os Desertos e a Luta contra a Desertificação (2010-2020). O problema afeta cerca de 2 bilhões de pessoas em todo o mundo, que vivem em desertos e terras secas

Ban Ki-moon alerta que desertificação pode aumentar conflitos por terra

O secretário-geral da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU), Ban Ki-moon, disse nesta segunda-feira (16) que a desertificação pode aumentar o risco de conflitos pela terra e acirrar instabilidades sociais nas cidades que recebem as pessoas que deixam suas regiões por causa da seca.

A ONU lançou nesta segunda-feira a Década para os Desertos e a Luta contra a Desertificação (2010-2020). O problema afeta cerca de 2 bilhões de pessoas em todo o mundo, que vivem em desertos e terras secas.

Ki-moon alertou que a migração forçada de milhões de pessoas, os chamados refugiados climáticos, cria riscos de colapso social nas terras que eles deixam para trás, além de piorar problemas sociais nas cidades que os abrigam, por causa da competição por trabalho, moradia e serviços.

Apesar da gravidade do problema, o secretário-geral da ONU disse que “é possível enfrentar o desafio” e que a ajuda a populações locais pode recuperar ou preservar milhões de hectares de terra, reduzir a vulnerabilidade dessas populações às mudanças climáticas e aliviar a fome e a pobreza.
