Lago na Argentina ‘reproduz condições primitivas da Terra’

Em um lago remoto, a 4,5 mil metros acima do nível do mar e em um habitat com pouco oxigênio, vivem as “superbactéras”.

Esses milhões de organismos resistentes a extremos, descobertos por uma equipe de investigadores da Argentina, poderiam ajudar a revelar como começou a vida na Terra e como seria possível sobreviver em outros planetas.

A descoberta se deu no lago Diamante, na província de Catamarca, no noroeste da Argentina – um espelho de água no meio de uma cratera vulcânica que, segundo os especialistas, é o mais próximo do ambiente primitivo da Terra que existia há 3,4 bilhões de anos atrás.

“Estas lagoas e as bactérias que sobrevivem nelas guardam o segredo de mecanismos de resistência a condições extremas que podem ter muitas aplicações biotecnológicas”, disse à BBC Mundo a microbióloga María Eugenia Farías, do Conselho Nacional de Pesquisas Científicas e Técnicas (Conicet, na sigla em espanhol).

Se as bactérias são capazes de sobreviver neste ambiente inóspito, sugerem os pesquisadores, talvez pudessem também sobreviver em um habitat como o do planeta Marte.

A pesquisa se insere na chamada ciência da astrobiologia, que investiga possíveis formas de vida extraterrestre.

Janela para o passado e o futuro – Há uma década, Farías e sua equipe se dedicam a estudar lagoas andinas localizadas entre 3,5 mil e 4,6 mil metros acima do nível do mar.

Na composição das águas dessas lagoas, muitas variáveis são extremas. No lago Diamante, por exemplo, a salinidade é cinco vezes maior do que no oceano e o arsênio, 20 mil vezes mais concentrado que na água considerada potável.

A alcalinidade é altíssima, a pressão do oxigênio é muito baixa e a radiação ultravioleta, elevada. As variações da temperatura também são extremas, com oscilações de até 40ºC entre o dia e a noite.

“Essas condições são muito semelhantes às da Terra primitiva, quando não havia camada de ozônio, e às de Marte, onde tampouco (a camada) existe. Nós sabemos que em Marte há água, ou houve água em outros momentos, e na Terra primitiva também havia água, porque foi daí que a vida evoluiu”, disse Faría.

Assim, em plena Puna argentina, os cientistas encontraram esses organismos formando os chamados “tapetes microbianos” ou estromatólitos. Essas associações microbianas de algas e bactérias são os primeiros registros conhecidos fósseis – só que agora foram encontrados vivos.

“É como um fóssil vivo: estamos encontrando o ecossistema mais antigo da Terra, vivo e se desenvolvendo nas condições mais semelhantes possível à da Terra primitiva.”

O que é particular em relação a estas superbactérias é que elas são capazes de prosperar em ambientes com múltiplas condições extremas – daí seu nome poliextremófilas.

“Agora queremos estudar o DNA completo de todas estas comunidades de bactérias e estudar os genes que lhes ajudam a viver nestas condições. Isto pode nos dizer muito sobre nosso passado”, disse Farías.

Sobre a vida extraterrena, diz a cientista, em teoria não há melhor laboratório que a Puna andina – com suas condições extremas de radiação ultravioleta, água e oxigênio rarefeito – para estudar como seria a sobrevivência de organismos em Marte.

Outros usos – Além disso, a descoberta, única no mundo, também permite antecipar outros usos para as bactérias poliextremófilas – por exemplo, na área de biocombustíveis.

“Se quisermos usar algas para produzir biocombustível, estas podem ser criadas em águas com altos níveis de arsênio, que não são utilizáveis para o consumo humano ou irrigação de colheitas”, diz Farías.

Para ela, a alga como matéria-prima para biocombustíveis tem também a vantagem de “não competir por áreas que poderiam ser usadas em outros cultivos”, especialmente na produção de alimentos.

Segundo ela, as bactérias também poderiam ser aplicadas em processos de “biorremediação”, que se refere ao uso de organismos para restaurar ecossistemas degradados.

Um exemplo seria a recuperação de habitats em zonas extremas, como a Antártida ou zonas de alta salinidade, nas quais os organismos seriam capazes de sobreviver.

Até a indústria farmacêutica poderia se beneficiar: os mecanismos de resistência desses organismos podem servir para produzir antioxidantes, antibióticos anti-tumorais e até cremes de proteção solar.
