Células de coral são congeladas para evitar extinção

Um banco de células de corais congeladas foi criado por pesquisadores americanos na esperança de evitar a extinção e de preservar a grandediversidade de corais do Havaí, anunciaram os cientistas nesta terça-feira (17).

O Instituto de Biologia Marinha da Universidade do Havaí e os serviços zoológicos da Smithsonian Institution de Washington instalaram um laboratório na ilha havaiana de Coconut Island, onde as primeiras células de coral cogumelo (Fungia scutaria) e de coral Montipora capitata foram congeladas.

“As células de coral congeladas são viáveis. Poderemos descongelar o material em 50 ou 1.000 anos em tese e, com isso, recriar uma espécie ou desenvolver uma população” de corais, explicou em um comunicado Mary Hagedorn, pesquisadora do Instituto de Conservação Biológica da Smithsonian Institution de Washington.

“De fato, já descongelamos amostras de esperma de coral com o objetivo de utilizá-las para fertilizar ovos de corais e produzir larvas de coral”, explicou.

Os corais são classificados como animais. Por causa da atividade humana, as barreiras de corais e diversos animais para os quais servem de habitat poderão desaparecer no decorrer dos próximos 40 anos, afirmam os responsáveis por esta experiência.
