Em 16 anos, o Brasil dobrou a quantidade de fertilizantes usados nas áreas plantadas. Foi de 69,4 quilos por hectare em 1992, para 143,7 quilos por hectare, em 2008, segundo informou nesta quarta, dia 1º, o Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), em sua pesquisa "Indicadores de Desenvolvimento Sustentável", referente ao ano de 2010.

O crescimento revela que embora não tenha ocorrido avanço no uso da terra, ocorreu uma intensificação no tipo de uso. Essa intensificação tem sido feita com excesso de uso de fertilizantes. Isso traz problemas ambientais sérios, como a contaminação dos lençóis freáticos e riscos à saúde dos consumidores e do homem rural.

A região Norte é a que menos aplica fertilizante por hectare plantado (57 quilos por hectare). Os Estados do Acre e Amazonas se destacam como os que menos aplicam (12,7 quilos por hectare e 12,8 quilos por hectare, respectivamente). As regiões Sudeste (199,3 quilos por hectare) e Centro-oeste (173,6 quilos por hectare) são as que mais usam fertilizantes por unidade de área. Os Estados de Minas Gerais (242 quilos por hectare) e Goiás (203,5 quilos por hectare) ficam bem acima do total nacional (143,7 quilos por hectare).

O uso de agrotóxicos também foi pesquisado para o levantamento. Neste ponto, São Paulo se destaca como o Estado que mais usa herbicidas, fungicidas, inseticidas e outros por hectare de plantação. Enquanto o total nacional ficou em 3,2 quilos por hectare, em 2005, em São Paulo são aplicados 7,6 quilos por hectare.
