Consumo de pescados no Brasil cresce 39% nos últimos sete anos

O consumo de pescados no Brasil aumentou 39,78% nos últimos sete anos, mas ainda está abaixo do que é recomendado pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) e também abaixo da média mundial.

Segundo balanço divulgado nesta quarta, dia 8, pelo ministro da Pesca e Aquicultura, Altemir Gregolin, o consumo anual por habitante no Brasil aumentou de 6,46 quilos em 2003 para 9,03 quilos no ano passado. A recomendação da OMS, porém, segundo o próprio ministro, é o consumo de 12 quilos por habitante/ano.

– Acredito que, no máximo, em cinco anos atingiremos essa meta – afirma Gregolin.

Já a média mundial de consumo de peixe está na casa dos 16 quilos por habitante/ano. De acordo com o ministro, essa média é inflada por países que tradicionalmente consomem muito peixe, como é o caso do Japão, onde o consumo per capita anual é de 60 quilos.

A produção brasileira de pescado também vem aumentando e passou de uma média de 990 mil toneladas em 2003 para 1,2 milhão de toneladas no ano passado. O volume, porém, ainda é bem inferior ao potencial estimado pelo governo para ser alcançado no longo prazo, que é de 20 milhões de toneladas.

Gregolin afirmou que o principal foco do ministério para aumentar a produção é estimular o mercado interno.

– A preocupação sempre foi maior com relação ao consumo interno do que com as exportações – diz.

No ano passado, o consumo total de pescados no Brasil foi de 1,7 milhão de toneladas, que inclui também a importação de pescados, vindo principalmente do Chile, Argentina e Noruega. Para o ministro, o aumento do consumo interno vem sendo estimulado pelo crescimento do emprego e da renda e por políticas de fomento como o estímulo à inclusão do pescado na alimentação escolar. Do total de peixes consumidos no Brasil, 30% são produzidos em água doce e o restante no mar.
