Embrapa tenta evitar extinção de raça de boi pantaneiro

Pesquisadores do Pantanal estão tentando salvar da extinção o tucura, uma das raças de gado mais antigas da região e mais adaptadas a ela. Atualmente, restam apenas cerca de 500 exemplares entre as quase 3 milhões de cabeças de gado da área.

“Muitos produtores pantaneiros começaram a achar que o tucura simbolizava a pecuária atrasada”, afirma Sandra Santos, pesquisadora da Embrapa Pantanal. “Afinal, as raças importadas passaram por um intenso processo de melhoramento genético, enquanto o boi do pantanal se adaptou principalmente devido à seleção natural”, diz.

O tucura chegou à região há mais de 300 anos, junto com os colonizadores ibéricos. Durante esse tempo, a raça foi se adaptando ao complexo ambiente pantaneiro – que tem longos períodos de seca e de cheia.

Um dos principais diferenciais do tucura é justamente este: quando outras raças já não conseguem mais pastar na vegetação inundada, ele ainda consegue resistir na região por certo tempo.

Isso acontece porque suas patas e seus cascos são mais resistentes à água. Uma ajuda e tanto no Pantanal, onde fazendas podem ficar submersas por até seis meses.

Apesar dessas características, o tucura parecia se encaminhar inevitavelmente para a extinção. Afinal, o porte compacto que lhe garante maior sobrevivência ante as intempéries pantaneiras é também seu maior “defeito” para os produtores: menos carne para vender.

Volta por cima - Para evitar o desaparecimento da raça, que é um dos símbolos do Pantanal, a Embrapa (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária) iniciou um processo de conservação e de investigação de novos usos comerciais.

Os dados finais só ficam prontos no ano que vem, mas análises preliminares mostram que a carne da raça é de muito boa qualidade.

Por ter mais gordura entremeando suas fibras, a carne do tucura é bem mais macia do que a do gado da região. Isso, segundo a Embrapa, pode possibilitar cruzamentos que inserissem essa característica em outras raças.

Além disso, há margem para cortes especiais e, talvez, certificados para produção sustentável no Pantanal. Seria o “bife pantaneiro”.

A coordenadora do projeto, Raquel Soares Juliano, diz que a resistência dos produtores já está diminuindo. Ela lembra que boa parte do sucesso do trabalho depende também deles.

“Se o produtor identificar um potencial de viabilidade econômica em um dos usos do tucura, ele será um parceiro na conservação e expansão da raça”, afirma.

Por isso, é importante buscar novas características. Testes feitos na fazenda modelo da entidade, na sub-região de Nhecolândia, em Corumbá (MS), mostram que o tucura também tem um bom potencial leiteiro.

Além disso, a maturidade sexual precoce – ao menos seis meses antes do nelore – também seria um atrativo.
