Brasil só discutirá criação da Bacia do Atlântico depois que EUA referendarem Convenção do Mar

O ministro da Defesa, Nelson Jobim, afirmou nesta quarta-feira (3) que o governo brasileiro só aceitará negociar com os Estados Unidos a criação da Bacia do Atlântico, que prevê a união dos países do Atlântico Sul e do Atlântico Norte e apagar a linha divisória entre os dois Atlânticos, depois que os norte-americanos referendarem a Convenção do Mar da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU).

“Com relação a iniciarmos esta discussão sobre o conceito novo que vem sendo denominado de Bacia do Atlântico e apagar a linha divisória entre o Atlântico Sul e o Atlântico Norte a minha opinião é a de que o Brasil só pode sentar à mesa com os EUA para tratar do tema depois que eles referendarem a Convenção do Mar da ONU, antes disso não”.

O ministro disse que o próprio governo norte-americano já concorda com este referendo, mas o Senado dos Estados Unidos, até o momento, vem rejeitando o referendo. Jobim lembrou que o Executivo mandou, inclusive, a mensagem para o Senado que não aceitou referendar a Convenção do Mar que traça o arcabouço jurídico para os limites de cada país em relação à sua costa marinha.

“O arcabouço jurídico para o mar está definido nessa convenção, e o Brasil é signatário dessa convenção. Os direitos do Brasil aos fundos marinhos até 350 milhas do litoral [onde inclusive está situado o pré-sal] decorre da Convenção do Mar. Ou seja, só é possível conversar com um país sobre temas como o da Bacia do Atlântico se ele respeitar esta regra”.

Jobim participou da 7ª Conferência de Segurança Internacional do Forte de Copacabana, que ocorre até esta quinta-feira (4) no Marriott Hotel, no Rio de Janeiro.
