Brasileiros gastam cinco vezes mais água que o indicado pela OMS

O brasileiro gasta, em média, cinco vezes mais água do que o volume indicado como suficiente pela Organização Mundial da Saúde – a organização recomenda o consumo diário de 40 litros diários por pessoa, enquanto no Brasil são consumidos 200 litros dia/pessoa, em média. A informação é resultado de uma pesquisa desenvolvida pela H2C Consultoria e Planejamento de Uso Racional da Água.

De acordo com a consultoria, faltam políticas globais de incentivo ao uso racional da água e as iniciativas existentes estão sempre voltadas para o aumento da produção de água, e não para a diminuição do consumo. “Até quando vamos deixar as campanhas de uso racional da água nas mãos das concessionárias; isto é contraditório, porque o negócio delas é vender água, assim, quanto maior o consumo e, por decorrência, a venda de água, mais as concessionárias lucram”, destaca Paulo Costa, consultor e especialista em projetos de Uso Racional da Água. O especialista explica que há alternativas que permitiriam reduzir o consumo de água imediatamente, sem necessidade de novos investimentos.

“Programas racionalizadores do uso da água foram empregados com sucesso por cidades como Nova York e Austin, nos EUA, e Cidade do México, por exemplo”, relata Paulo Costa, da H2C Consultoria e Planejamento de Uso Racional da Água. De acordo com o consultor, a Prefeitura de Nova York implementou um programa de incentivo à substituição de equipamentos gastadores de água – bacias sanitárias, especialmente – por outros, racionalizadores.

O programa foi implementado, entre 1994 e 1996, com investimento de 240 milhões de dólares no incentivo à troca de bacias e válvulas sanitária, permitindo a economia de 288 milhões de litros por dia. Os consumidores passaram a economizar até 35% na sua conta de água mensal. Além disso, os técnicos da prefeitura nova-iorquina constataram também que conservar/economizar 100 milhões de litros de água, por exemplo, sai até um quarto do custo exigido para captar, tratar e distribuir igual volume de água, ou seja, é muito mais barato racionalizar do que aumentar a produção.
