Desmatamento no Piauí ganha destaque nacional

Uma reportagem exibida na última segunda-feira pelo Jornal da Globo, da TV Globo, denunciou a destruição da Mata Atlântica no município de Morro Cabeça no Tempo, a 874 km da capital. O município, com menos de cinco mil habitantes, concentra várias carvoarias e o mais preocupante é que a maioria delas funciona com a autorização da Secretaria Estadual de Meio Ambiente e Recursos Hídricos. A reportagem destaca ainda as conseqüências dessa produção desenfreada de carvão sobre o clima, a vegetação, as espécies animais e sobre a população do município.

O Piauí foi tema da primeira reportagem da série "Globo Na-tureza". O repórter José Rai-mundo foi ao município, na região da Serra Vermelha, e conversou com pesquisadores e trabalhadores das carvoarias. Ele constatou que, perto dos fornos onde o carvão é queimado, a temperatura chega a 52º C. A reportagem afirma ainda que a Secretaria de Meio Ambiente não reconhece o local como Mata Atlântica e ressalta que o Ibama realiza uma fiscalização precária no local.

Pelo menos 10 toneladas de carvão são produzidas na região todos os meses. Essa seria a produção das carvoarias "legalizadas". A mesma quantidade sai dos fornos das carvoarias clandestinas, segundo os ambi-entalistas. "É quente demais! Não tem outro trabalho, tem que fazer o que tem", conta o carvoejador Gisley Omélio. A professora Luzia Luz Neto diz na matéria: "Se você tivesse vindo aqui nos anos 90, o clima era outro, bem mais agradável, bem mais fresco, dava pra viver muito bem. E hoje a gente percebe que é muito quente".

"As consequências já são visíveis. A maior lagoa da região encolheu 30%. Rios estão secando, nascentes desapareceram. Uma área, por onde o vaqueiro Claudionor Ribeiro passava todos os dias, era um brejo que matava a sede da boiada e do vaqueiro. Ele conta até onde chegava a água antes da seca dos rios. Na região da Serra Vermelha, de grande importância ambiental, três biomas se encontram no mesmo lugar: caatinga, cerrado e mata Atlântica.

De todos os biomas brasileiros a mata Atlântica é o mais ameaçado. Tem apenas cerca de 7% de sua cobertura original. Por isso, qualquer desma-tamento é proibido, nenhuma árvore pode ser derrubada. Mas no Piauí as carvoarias desrespeitam a lei e com a conivência de quem deveria proteger a floresta. Elas têm licença de funcionamento dada pela Secretaria Estadual do Meio Ambiente. Mesmo as instaladas dentro da mata Atlântica. Ao Ibama cabe fiscalizar. O único escritório do órgão no local tem dois fiscais e uma área do tamanho do estado de Sergipe pra dar conta", diz a reportagem.

A produção do Piauí - a le-gal e a ilegal - carrega cerca de 15 caminhões por dia. O carvão viaja quase dois mil quilômetros praticamente sem barreiras nas estradas. O polo siderúrgico de Sete Lagoas, em Minas Gerais é o destino de todo o carvão que sai do Piauí. Muitos dos fornos - que produzem ferro gusa - se alimentam da destruição das matas nativas.

Das 61 indústrias que funcionam na região, menos de dez consomem carvão de procedência legal. Uma delas começou há 15 anos a plantar sua própria floresta. Só em uma fazenda tem 21 mil hectares de eucalipto.

Para o sindicato das indústrias, a saída é a nova lei florestal do estado de Minas que vai obrigar as empresas a consumir carvão vegetal apenas de floresta plantada. A nova lei mineira estabelece um prazo: a partir de 2017, 95% do carvão consumido pelas indústrias de ferro gusa deverão ser de floresta plantada. Até lá ainda vamos ouvir muito barulho de motosserra nas matas nordestinas.
