Ataques de tubarão aumentaram 25% no mundo, mostra levantamento

O número de ataques de tubarão pelo mundo no ano passado aumentou 25% em relação a 2009, de acordo com levantamento da Universidade da Flórida divulgado nesta segunda-feira (7).

Ao todo, 79 ataques ocorreram em 2010, o maior número desde 2000, quando o total foi de 80. Seis pessoas morrreram em decorrência, número pouco acima da média da última década. Em 2009, houve 63 ataques, número próximo da média anual durante a última década, que é de 63,5.

Os pesquisadores apontam que, apesar da alta em 2010, o número médio da última década indica que tem havido uma diminuição deste tipo de incidente nos últimos anos.

EUA lideram

Os Estados Unidos tiveram 36 incidentes, incluindo 5 na Carolina do Norte e 4 em cada um dos seguintes estados: Califórnia, Havaí e Carolina do Sul. A Flórida, campeã histórica de ataques, segue na frente, mas com uma progressiva diminuição: em 2007 foram 31 ataques, contra 28 em 2008, 18 em 2009 e, finalmente, 13 no ano passado.

Os EUA lideram mundialmente número de ataques de tubarão, seguidos por Austrália (14 ataques), África do Sul (8), Vietnã (6) e Egito (6). O Brasil também consta do levantamento, com um ataque registrado. Os pesquisadores contaram apenas os casos que puderam verificar como verdadeiros e em que não houve nenhum tipo de provocação por parte de humanos, como a colocação de iscas.

O evento mais surpreendente envolvendo esse tipo de incidente ocorreu na costa do Egito, no início de dezembro, quando aconteceram cinco ataques, incluindo a morte de uma turista. Os incidentes aconteceram no prazo de cinco dias e quatro dos cinco ataques foram atribuídos a dois tubarões específicos.

"Esta foi uma situação extremamente incomum para os padrões de ataque de tubarão", disse o ictiólogo George Burgess, diretor do Arquivo Internacional de Ataues de Tubarões da universidade, que pesquisa esse tipo de peixe há mais de 35 anos, em nota. "Foi provavelmente o incidente mais incomum da minha carreira."

No fim, mesmo atacando humanos dezenas de vezes por ano, os tubarões saem perdendo nessa disputa: a espécie humana mata 30 a 70 milhões de tubarões por ano por meio da pesca, enquanto tubarões matam em média cinco humanos por ano. Estatisticamente, o número de mortes causadas por tubarões é mínimo se considerado que há bilhões de seres humanos entrando no mar regularmente.
