Mudanças climáticas devem provocar migração inédita na Ásia-Pacífico

Um número sem precedentes de pessoas da região da Ásia-Pacífico estão sujeitas a deslocamentos forçados em razão de enchentes, tempestades e outros impactos das mudanças climáticas, segundo relatório do Banco de Desenvolvimento Asiático (BDA) divulgado nesta semana.

O banco e os climatologistas afirmaram que a região, que abriga 4 bilhões de pessoas, estará entre as mais afetadas pelos impactos das mudanças climáticas, que levará a uma migração tanto dentro dos países, como entre as nações, sobrecarregando os recursos.

O relatório preliminar intitulado Migração em razão das mudanças climáticas exige atenção também destaca que nenhum mecanismo internacional foi criado para controlar a movimentação forçada de milhões de pessoas. "Os esquemas de proteção e assistência permanecem inadequados, mal coordenados e escassos. Os governos nacionais e a comunidade internacional precisam tratar dessa questão urgentemente de maneira proativa", ressalta o documento.

Não adotar medidas emergenciais poderia resultar em desastres humanitários, concluiu o relatório. O documento, feito para as autoridades, examinou as ameaças climáticas e a natureza complexa das migrações. Uma das conclusões aponta que as mudanças climáticas são apenas um de diversos gatilhos, que incluem ainda um número cada vez maior de pessoas que buscam emprego nas cidades.

O documento apontou os impactos, tais como temperaturas mais elevadas, mudança nos padrões de chuva, maior variabilidade das monções, elevação do nível dos oceanos, enchentes e ciclones tropicais mais intensos.

As inundações de 2010 no Paquistão provocaram o deslocamento temporário ou permanente de milhões de pessoas. O Sri Lanka passa agora pela segunda onda de enchentes no país em menos de um mês, que ameaça até 90% da produção de arroz. Mais de 250 mil pessoas buscam refúgio em abrigos temporários.

"O Pacífico é especialmente vulnerável por causa de seu alto grau de exposição a riscos ambientais e da alta densidade populacional. Como resultado, ele poderá passar por deslocamentos de populações em uma escala sem precedentes nas próximas décadas", alerta o relatório do BDA.
