Animais extintos na natureza sobrevivem em zoos

Muitos criticam, outros adoram e muitos governos apoiam. Apesar do caráter controverso dos zoológicos (de aprisionar animais), as instituições se defendem e investem pesado na preservação de espécies e subespécies ameaçadas de extinção. Algumas, inclusive, já extintas na natureza, como o leão do Atlas, também conhecido como leão berbere (Panthera leo leo).

O maior dos leões só existe hoje por causa de programas de proteção e do trabalho dos zoológicos, já que desapareceu do norte da África. Na metade do século XX, quando os últimos espécimes sumiram da natureza, ele só poderia ser visto no zoo de Rabat, no Marrocos. A reprodução controlada faz com o que o animal hoje possa ser visto em outros locais, principalmente na Europa.

Contudo, apesar do lado nobre desses estabelecimentos, eles sofrem com muitas críticas de especialistas. Sônia Teresinha Felipe, doutora em filosofia moral e professora da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), afirmou em entrevista ao Terra que a preservação da bagagem genética de uma espécie não é o suficiente para salvá-la.

“O que os zoos fazem é procurar a reprodução biológica de espécies ameaçadas de extinção. Mas, quando falamos em preservar espécies não pensamos que uma espécie seja constituída apenas por sua bagagem genética. Cada espécie animal precisa de um espírito específico, que permita a preservação daquele tipo de vida de forma autônoma. Isso os zoos não podem fazer. No máximo, o que eles preservam, é o banco genético. (…) Guardamos, assim, o patrimônio genético, que é matéria biológica. Matamos o patrimônio genuinamente ‘animal’ dessas espécies.”
