Em meio à crise de extinção, 15 espécies são reencontradas

Durante uma busca que durou cinco meses e percorreu nada menos do que 21 países, pesquisadores redescobriram 15 espécies que eram dadas como desaparecidas. Entre elas, sapos, salamandras, uma perereca e a cobra-cega do gênero Caecilia. Um dos sapos, que estava na Índia, não era visto há mais de um século.

Cientistas estimam que mais de 30% dos anfíbios estão desaparecendo por causa de um fungo que se espalhou pelo mundo na última década, uma decorrência da mudança climática e da perda de seus habitats.

Em um estudo divulgado nesta quinta-feira (17), conservacionistas afirmam que de dez espécies de anfíbios consideradas realmente extintas, somente uma foi reencontrada – a no Equador, chamada de sapo do rio pescado.

De acordo com o especialista em anfíbios Robin Moore, da Conservação Internacional (CI), que participou da empreitada global com o Grupo de Especialistas em Anfíbios da União Mundial para a Conservação da Natureza (IUCN, da sigla em inglês), o exemplar achado no Equador pode dar indícios que expliquem como pôde sobreviver à extinção em massa que ocorre em nível global.

“Pode ser que os sobreviventes sejam resistentes à doença por motivos genéticos ou por serem beneficiados por uma bactéria que a combata”, disse Moore a agência de notícias AFP.
