Peru sabia que 90% do mogno exportado é ilegal, revela Wikileaks

Nesta terça-feira (22), a Survival International divulgou a informação de que o governo peruano está ciente de que algo entre 70 e 90% de suas exportações de mogno provém de exploração ilegal na Amazônia. A informação foi vazada pelo site Wikileaks através de um telegrama de 2006 da Embaixada dos Estados Unidos, país que importou no ano anterior cerca de 88% deste tipo de madeira vinda do Peru.

Mas diversos estabelecimentos comerciais norte-americanos juram que importam madeira legalizada do Peru. O então embaixador dos Estados Unidos no Peru, James Struble, tentou desqualificar a informação, dizendo que aquelas eram estimativas não oficiais do órgão responsável pelo controle dos recursos naturais no país sul-americano.

A exploração madeireira descontrolada e irregular foi recentemente revelada por denúncias de organizações como a Survival International, apontando que madeireiros têm invadido áreas protegidas onde vivem grupos indígenas isolados, forçados a cruzar a fronteira com o Brasil. O diretor da entidade, Stephen Corry comentou que o telegrama americano é um atestado de que as autoridades peruanas sabiam do que estava acontecendo, mas nada fizeram para impedir os saques à floresta e as ameaças a`s populações amazônicas.

“É inacreditável que após cinco anos, ainda vemos o desmatamento ilegal e sistemático e um completo fracasso para salvaguardar a terra habitada por povos indígenas vulneráveis. Os consumidores nos EUA e na Europa simplesmente não podem se basear em documentos que pretendem mostrar que o mogno peruano é de origem sustentável, já que seus certificados de garantia são claramente inválidos”, declarou em nota.
