Rinocerontes africanos ameaçados pela caça

O ressurgimento da caça a rinocerontes na África do Sul, Zimbábue e Quênia ameaça a recuperação do número deste animais no continente. Nos últimos três anos, mais de 800 animais foram abatidos por redes criminosas bem organizadas, que traficam o chifre do animal para países asiáticos, principalmente o Vietnã. O alerta foi dado durante um encontro realizado na África do Sul, em que especialistas avaliaram a situação dos rinocerontes e identificaram estratégias para combater a caça, e divulgado pela IUCN.

Nos últimos anos, tanto a população das duas espécies de rinocerontes africanos aumentaram. Os rinocerontes-negros (Diceros bicornis), classificado pela IUCN como espécie criticamente ameaçada, aumentaram de 4.240 em 2007, para 4.840 atualmente, enquanto os brancos (Ceratotherium simum) passaram de 17.500 em 2007, para 20.150. Mas os especialistas temem que os esforços feitos em favor das espécies sejam desperdiçados, devido ao aumento da caça. Só na África do Sul, 333 rinocerontes foram mortos no ano passado e mais 70 no decorrer de 2011.

Para os experts é necessária uma maior cooperação entre pesquisadores, policia e promotores. Pedem também mais sensibilidade a juízes e magistrados em relação aos rinocerontes. Enquanto o número de prisões têm aumentado, ainda é preciso, na opinião dos especialistas, aumentar a taxa de condenações. Eles clamam também pelo desenvolvimento de novas ferramentas e tecnologias para combater a caça ilegal dos animais.

A implantação de uma unidade para combater crimes contra a vida selvagem na África do Sul foi elogiada. Outras medidas consideradas positivas foram o registro do DNAs de chifres, aumento da proteção dos habitats dos rinocerontes e cooperação com outras instituições, inclusive do Vietnã. Está havendo também maior aproximação com comunidades e pessoas que abrigam rinocerontes em suas terras. Mas o grupo criticou o comportamento de caçadores profissionais e pediram maior rigor na concessão de licenças para caça.

Chifres de rinocerontes são vendidos a preços elevados no mercado negro do Sudeste Asiático, onde muita gente acredita que eles tenham propriedades medicinais. Em pouco mais de duas décadas durante o século passado, a população de rinocerontes-negros foi reduzida em 96%. Em 1970, havia 65 mil rinocerontes-negros na África, em 1993 apenas 2,3 mil havia sobrevivido. Esforços contra a caça vêm contribuindo para a recuperação da espécie desde 1996.
