Mudanças climáticas podem inviabilizar Belo Monte

Semana passada o WWF-Brasil divulgou dados preliminares do Estudo sobre os Impactos das Mudanças Climáticas no Bloco Norte de Geração Energia Hidrelétrica no qual afirma que, até 2050, Belo Monte poderá perder mais de 80% de sua receita anual devido à diminuição da vazão do rio Xingu, causada por alterações climáticas.

Foram considerados diferentes cenários de mudanças no clima até 2050 para determinar a sustentabilidade financeira da usina, o que faz com que os resultados sejam bem diferentes entre si. Uns apontam que a receita poderia aumentar 4%, outros sinalizam queda de 90%. No entanto, a organização identificou a tendência de variação da receita entre 4% e 10%.

De acordo com a organização, variabilidades climáticas não estão sendo levadas em consideração pelo governo brasileiro quando se trata de planejamento energético para o país, o que inclui a construção de grandes barragens na Amazônia - e Belo Monte é, com o perdão do trocadilho, um belo exemplo disso. "A usina pode gerar muito menos energia do que o previsto e muito menos receitas do que o esperado, tornando-se um fracasso financeiro", afirma Carlos Rittl, coordenador do Programa de Mudanças Climáticas e Energia do WWF-Brasil. O estudo tem sido feito em parceria com a HSBC Climate Partnership e deverá ser lançado entre junho e julho deste ano.

2050 está longe?

Para quem pensa que 2050 ainda está muito longe, Rittl cita exemplos de mudanças climáticas que já vem afetando o Brasil nos últimos anos. “Em 2004 vimos um furação no sul, que também já sofreu com enchentes severas. Em 2005 houve recorde de seca na Amazônia e na última década a falta de chuva afetou a agricultura no sul do país. Em 2009, vimos recorde de cheia na Amazônia, em 2010 novo recorde de seca na região e enchente no nordeste. Este ano, mil pessoas morreram na região serrana do Rio. No mínimo, a realidade está de acordo com as previsões. Eventos extremos vão acontecer com mais frequência até 2050. Melhor pensar nisso agora do que deixar para depois. O problema demanda ações imediatas”.
