FAO alerta que aquecimento global terá efeitos graves sobre alimentos

A Organização das Nações Unidas para Agricultura e Alimentação, FAO, alertou, no final de março, sobre o que chamou de "potenciais efeitos catastróficos" das mudanças climáticas na produção de alimentos entre 2050 e 2100.

A agência apresentou um documento à Convenção das Nações Unidas sobre Mudanças Climáticas, sugerindo aos governos medidas para evitar que a segurança alimentar seja comprometida.

Países em desenvolvimento

Segundo a FAO, as consequências do aquecimento global devem cada vez mais atingir nações em desenvolvimento. A agência exortou os governos a preparar suas populações para estes impactos, investindo em agricultura para que se tornem mais resistentes.

Apesar de ressaltar a importância de lidar com os riscos mais imediatos, o diretor- assistente geral para Recursos Naturais da FAO, Alexander Müller, reforçou que não faz sentido tentar mitigar as mudanças de longo prazo após seus efeitos começarem a ser sentidos.

A FAO aconselhou que se crie um banco de gens, porque algumas espécies correm o risco de desaparecer. Além disso, a organização afirmou ser necessário desenvolver variedades de alimentos melhor adaptadas às condições climáticas futuras.

Como impacto do aquecimento global na agricultura, os preços dos alimentos tendem a subir, tornando as populações mais pobres ainda mais vulneráveis. A Comissão Econômica e Social para a Ásia e o Pacífico, Escap, revelou que 20 milhões de pessoas foram impedidas de sair da pobreza no ano passado devido à elevação dos preços no setor alimentar.
