Escassez de alimento reduz população de pinguins da Antártida

Pinguins naturais do lado oeste da Antártida estão em declínio devido à falta de acesso ao krill, um micro crustáceo parecido com o camarão, que constitui a principal fonte de alimento da espécie.

É o que revela um estudo recém-divulgado da entidade de pesquisa americana Nationaly Academy of Sciences.

Após terem acompanhado dados sobre os pinguins nos últimos 30 anos, pesquisadores disseram que números do pinguim Adelie e do pinguim de Chinstrap, naturais da região, vêm caindo desde 1986.

O aquecimento das águas, a redução da camada de gelo e um aumento nas populações de baleias e focas estão entre os motivos citados para a redução do krilll.

O krill da Antártida (Euphausia superba) é um animal de em média seis centímetros, e é considerado uma das espécies mais abundantes do planeta, encontrado em locais com densidade de até 30 mil espécies por metros cúbico de água.

Ele é também uma das espécies-chave dos ecossistemas encontrados na Antártida e em suas imediações, por ser o principal alimento de todos os animais vertebrados da região, entre eles o pinguim de Chinstrap e o Adelie.

No documento, a equipe de pesquisadores disse que uma série de fatores contribuíram para as mudanças na região.

'A província ocidental da Antártida e o Mar da Escócia contam com abundantes formas de vida, muitas das quais foram quase dizimadas por humanos'', afirma o documento.

''A região é também uma das que mais vêm aquecendo no planeta, com aumentos registrados de 5 a 6 graus mesmo durante o auge do inverno e com declínios na camada de gelo característica da região.''

Os cientistas chegaram à conclusão também de que as mais recentes descobertas põem em cheque conceitos científicos antigos, como o de que a redução na camada de gelo havia levado a um declínio de espécies ''amantes de gelo'' com o declínio de seus habitats invernais, mas que populações que ''avessas ao gelo'' teriam registrado aumento.

Os especialistas argumentam que as descobertas mostaram que desde a década de 80 houve um amento tanto dos Adelies amantes de gelo (Pygoscelis adeliae) como dos avessos ao gelo Chinstraps (Pygoscelis antarctica). As populações de ambas as espécies teriam sofrido reduções de até 50%.

Como resultado, os pesquisadores agora defendem uma hipótese ''mais sólida'', de que as populações de pinguins estão ligadas à abudância da sua principal fonte de alimento, o krill.

''Relacionar tendências de abundância de pinguins com tendências de biomassa de krill explica o porquê das populações de Adelies e chinstraps terem aumentado após seus competidores (focas, baleias de barbatanas e alguns peixes) terem sido quase extintos nos séculos 19 e 20, e atualmente estão diminuindo em relação à mudança climáticas'', afirma o documento.

De acordo com o documento, a crescente competição com populações de baleia e de focas por alimento, por um lado, e as mudanças climáticas, por outro, tem contribuído para uma considerável redução no número do cardume de krill.

Os cientistas acreditam que se o aquecimento global prosseguir, o quadro deverá se agravar ainda mais.
