Preço do ouro impulsiona desmatamento

A elevação nos preços internacionais do ouro é uma má notícia para a floresta de Madre de Dios, no Peru. Um estudo publicado na edição da última terça-feira, 19, no jornal PLoS One, demonstra a relação entre o aumento do preço do metal nobre e o avanço do desmatamento provocado pelo garimpo nesta região. Para elaborar o artigo, a equipe liderada pela professora assistente de Análise Geospacial, Jennifer Swenson, da Escola Nicholas de Meio Ambiente da Universidade Duke analisou imagens de satélite e informações sobre a cotação do ouro e importações peruanas de mercúrio entre 2003 e 2009.

Durante o período, cerca de 6.6 mil hectares de florestas foram desmatados. A média anual de desmatamento aumentou seis vezes no segundo triênio (2006/2009) em comparação aos três primeiros anos de estudo (2003/2009), passando de anuais 292 hectares para 1915 hectares. “Nos dois locais estudados, Guacamayo e Colorado-Puquiri, aproximadamente 5 mil acres foram desmatados em apenas três anos, entre 2006 e 2009, ultrapassando o desmatamento em áreas próximas causado por assentamentos humanos”, afirma Swenson.

Além do desmatamento, o preço do ouro impulsionou também as importações de mercúrio pelo Peru. Este metal é pesado, pode provocar danos neurológicos, contamina o solo, é capaz de entrar na cadeia alimentar e contaminar peixes, animais que se alimentam deles e seres humanos. O mercúrio pode ser transportados por milhares de quilômetros pela atmosfera ou por águas superficiais. O garimpo é o segundo maior emissor de mercúrio, atrás apenas da queima de combustíveis fósseis.

Segundo os pesquisadores, virtualmente, todo o mercúrio importado pelo Peru vai parar em garimpos. Esta importação também tem acompanhado o preço do ouro, segundo Swenson. Em 2011, a projeção feita pela pesquisadora indica que vai ser duas vezes maior do que há seis anos e deve chegar a 500 toneladas. Limitar a importação do produto é uma medida indicada por Swenson para reduzir o garimpo no Peru.
