ONU alerta para utilização mais sustentável dos recursos da Terra

O Sub-Secretário-Geral para Assuntos Econômicos e Sociais da Organização das Nações Unidas, Sha Zukang, alertou o mundo nesta segunda-feira (2/5) para as consequências do consumo e da produção insustentáveis, e instou os Estados-membros da ONU a chegarem a um acordo para promover o uso mais eficiente e seguro dos recursos do Planeta.

"Precisamos mudar os nossos padrões de produção e consumo, para que nossa economia continue seguindo caminhos sustentáveis e para que sejamos capazes de enfrentar os desafios globais, como as mudanças climáticas, a escassez de água e outros recursos e a degradação ambiental", disse Zukang na abertura da 19ª sessão da Comissão das Nações Unidas sobre Desenvolvimento Sustentável.

No encontro, realizado na sede da Organização em Nova York (EUA), a Comissão irá avaliar e debater políticas de promoção do consumo e produção sustentáveis, de melhoria na segurança no uso de produtos químicos e de aprimoramento da gestão de resíduos, entre outras.

Responsabilidade - Todos os olhares estão voltados para a Comissão, que deve apresentar orientações e recomendações, ainda neste ano, para mobilizar e apoiar países e outros atores para o consumo e a produção sustentáveis. Sha Zukang acrescentou, ainda, que essa iniciativa irá contribuir para o sucesso da Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Desenvolvimento Sustentável (Rio+20), a ser realizada no Rio de Janeiro em 2012.

Segundo ele, o consumo e a produção sustentáveis precisam ser incorporados na tomada de decisão dos governos e outras organizações, inclusive a própria ONU. "Muito mais pode e deve ser feito em todo o mundo para buscarmos um crescimento econômico ambientalmente inclusivo. Precisamos acelerar nossos esforços para promover o desenvolvimento sustentável e cumprir nosso compromisso com as gerações futuras", frisou o oficial da ONU, que também exerce o cargo de Secretário-Geral da Rio+20.

Cerca de mil representantes de governos, organizações não-governamentais (ONGs) e outros setores da sociedade civil participam da reunião da Comissão, que terá duas semanas de duração e será a última sessão antes da Rio+20. A ministra brasileira do Meio Ambiente, Izabella Teixeira, participará do Segmento de Alto Nível do encontro, previsto para os dias 11, 12 e 13 de maio.

A Rio+20 marcará o 20º aniversário da adoção da Agenda 21, o modelo de desenvolvimento sustentável que foi acordado na Cimeira da Terra de 1992, realizada no Brasil.
