Norte de MG pode virar deserto dentro de 20 anos

Um terço do território de Minas Gerais pode virar "deserto" em 20 anos. A conclusão é de um estudo encomendado pelo Ministério do Meio Ambiente ao governo mineiro e concluído em março.

O desmatamento, a monocultura e a pecuária intensiva, somados a condições climáticas adversas, empobreceram o solo de 142 municípios do Estado.

Extração agressiva deve continuar na região mineira

Se nada for feito para reverter o processo, de acordo com o estudo, essas terras não terão mais uso econômico ou social, o que vai afetar 20% da população mineira.

Isso obrigaria 2,2 milhões de pessoas a deixar a região norte do Estado e os vales do Mucuri e do Jequitinhonha.
"A terra perde os nutrientes e fica estéril, não serve para a agricultura nem consegue sustentar a vegetação nativa", afirma Rubio de Andrade, presidente do Instituto de Desenvolvimento do Norte e Nordeste de Minas, responsável pelo estudo. A região engloba cerrado, caatinga e mata atlântica.

Segundo o governo do Estado, é preciso investir R$ 1,3 bilhão nas próximas décadas para frear o processo, que já causa danos no semiárido mineiro. Lá estão 88 das 142 cidades consideradas suscetíveis à desertificação.

Vladia Oliveira, professora do Departamento de Geografia da Universidade Federal do Ceará, disse que áreas desertificadas são diferentes de desertos naturais porque passam por um acentuado declínio de biodiversidade até se tornarem estéreis.

"Já os desertos são ecossistemas com sustentabilidade, ainda que com baixa diversidade. Eles estão vivos."

PROGRAMA NACIONAL

O estudo foi encomendado para o Programa de Ação Nacional de Combate à Desertificação, que terá R$ 6 milhões neste ano para combater a desertificação no país.

Andrade diz que, para reduzir o fenômeno, é preciso aumentar as reservas naturais de vegetação e recuperar os recursos hídricos.

O agricultor Geraldo Moreno, 50, dono de três hectares em Espinosa (700 km de BH), já sente as mudanças em sua pequena lavoura de feijão.

"Se der para [alimentar] a família dá para comemorar", diz ele, que sustenta mulher e quatro filhos com a terra.
"Aqui não chove quase nada e não tenho dinheiro para adubar a terra. O que salva são as cabras, mas estão magras", diz o mineiro, que recebe verba do Bolsa Família para complementar a renda.

O governo pretende reduzir o espaço destinado ao gado nas áreas de caatinga e restringir atividades prejudiciais ao meio ambiente, como a extração de carvão.

"A população tem de se conscientizar de que, se essas ações não forem tomadas, nada mais poderá ser produzido", diz Andrade.
