Para IPCC, renováveis são saída para aquecimento global

Com as tecnologias disponíveis atualmente, é possível que apenas 2,5% das fontes viáveis de energias renováveis consigam suprir cerca de 80% da demanda mundial de energia até 2050. Essa é uma das informações contidas no novo relatório lançado, nesta segunda-feira (09/05), pelo Painel Intergovernamental de Mudanças Climáticas (IPCC).

O relatório especial sobre energias renováveis, cujo título original é "The Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources (SREEN)", destaca o potencial das fontes alternativas e seu papel fundamental na mitigação das mudanças climáticas. O IPCC prevê que se toda a gama de tecnologias renováveis fossem utilizadas, o mundo poderia manter as suas concentrações de gases-estufa abaixo de 450 partes por milhão (ppm). Este é limite previsto pelos cientistas como seguro, além do qual as mudanças do clima se tornam catastróficas e irreversíveis.

O diretor de Energias Renováveis do Greenpeace Internacional e um dos autores do relatório do IPCC, Sven Teske, afirma que "o estudo revela evidências científicas irrefutáveis de que as energias renováveis são capazes de atender à crescente demanda dos países em desenvolvimento, onde mais de dois bilhões de indivíduos não tem acesso a serviços básicos de energia. É possível atingir esse objetivo com uma taxa mais competitiva e de forma mais rápida do que com as fontes convencionais. Os governos têm que iniciar a revolução, através da implementação de legislação sobre energias renováveis em todo o mundo".

Dados do SREEN já apontam para uma crescente participação das renováveis na capacidade de energia instalada nos últimos anos. Entre 2008 e 2009, dos 300 gigawatts (GW) de novas fontes de geração de energia disponíveis no mundo, 140 GW provinham de fontes renováveis, como a eólica e solar.

Segundo Rajendra Pachauri, presidente do IPCC, investir em energias renováveis, na quantidade necessária, custaria cerca de 1% do PIB mundial por ano. Embora seja um valor relativamente baixo, os autores do estudo reconhecem que as tecnologias empregadas nas renováveis ainda são mais caras do que as baseadas em combustíveis fósseis. Além disso, declaram que será preciso aumentar em até 20 vezes a produção de energia renovável para evitar níveis perigosos de gases de efeito estufa. Mesmo com esse panorama eles estão otimistas sobre o futuro e preveem que o papel dessa energia limpa será muito mais importante do que a captura de carbono até 2050.
