Relatório sobre “Riscos das Mudanças Climáticas no Brasil” mostra impactos na Amazônia

O aumento na temperatura e o decréscimo das chuvas na Amazônia acima da variação global média esperada estão entre as principais conclusões do relatório final do projeto “Riscos das Mudanças Climáticas no Brasil”, divulgado pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe/MCT) e o Met Office Hadley Centre (MOHC), um dos principais centros mundiais de pesquisa sobre mudanças climáticas. O documento é resultado de três anos de trabalho de pesquisadores do Reino Unido e do Brasil, com financiamento da Embaixada Britânica.

Os estudos mostram a importância da Amazônia para o clima global e como provedora de serviços ambientais para o Brasil. O objetivo do projeto é subsidiar os formuladores de políticas com evidências científicas das mudanças climáticas e de seus possíveis impactos no Brasil, na América do Sul e em nível global.

“A experiência do MOHC do Reino Unido, líder mundial em modelagem climática, aliada à experiência do Inpe em estudos sobre mudanças climáticas na América do Sul, possibilitou a identificação de possíveis cenários e impactos, com projeções inovadoras dos efeitos das mudanças climáticas antrópicas na região”, afirmou José Marengo, pesquisador do Inpe que coordenou o projeto no Brasil.

O projeto utilizou um conjunto de modelos globais e regionais desenvolvidos pelo MOHC e pelo Centro de Ciência do Sistema Terrestre do Inpe para projetar os efeitos das emissões de gases de efeito estufa no clima do mundo todo e fornecer mais detalhes sobre o Brasil. Embora as projeções abranjam todo o país, o foco do relatório se concentra na Amazônia, área de preocupação nacional, regional e mundial.

O documento está dividido em duas seções: a primeira fornece o contexto para o trabalho; a segunda detalha a nova ciência levada a cabo e antecipa avanços científicos importantes para o planejamento e a política.

O projeto “Riscos das Mudanças Climáticas no Brasil” foi criado pelo Fundo para Programas Estratégicos do Governo do Reino Unido, antigo Global Opportunity Fund (GOF). O trabalho terá continuidade como parte do programa científico do Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia para Mudanças Climáticas (INCT para Mudanças Climáticas) e da Rede Brasileira de Pesquisas sobre Mudanças Climáticas Globais (Rede Clima, sediados no Inpe.
