Mobilização pela preservação do cágado de barbicha acontece sábado (14) em Teresina

Acontece na manhã de sábado (14), uma mobilização em favor dos Cágados de barbicha, em riscos de extinção, no Encontro dos Rios, no bairro Poti Velho, zona norte de Teresina, a partir das 10 horas da manhã. Na oportunidade haverá blitz educativa, sinalização das áreas de reprodução, participação de entidades, ONGs, artistas e grupos de pessoas ligadas ao movimento pela vida e travessia dos Cágados de Barbicha.

Com o objetivo de despertar a conscientização e sensibilidade da população, principalmente dos condutores de veículos, que acabam matando por atropelamento os cágados na sua tradicional travessia na Avenida Boa Esperança, zona norte de Teresina.

O cágado de barbicha, é um animal de pequeno porte, comumente encontrado em rios, lagos e lagoas de correnteza lenta, que alimenta-se de pequenos peixes, sementes e frutos. Quando adultos, chegam a atingir perto de 40 cm de diâmetro. O cágado de barbicha se desloca nos períodos chuvosos das lagoas do Poti Velho para o Rio Parnaíba. As fêmeas põem seus ovos em ninhos que constroem nas proximidades dos cursos d’água.

De acordo com a ambientalista e bióloga Jaqueline Lustosa, autora do Projeto de Preservação dos Cágados de barbicha, esses animais são vítimas de atropelamento porque em sua travessia antes mesmo de procriarem, o que significa risco para a espécie.

“Todos os anos, vamos fazer uma nova mobilização para tentar conscientizar à população e os turistas que se deslocam pela Avenida Boa Esperança, para evitar os atropelamentos desses pequenos animais, que morrem antes de chegar ao seu destino”, acrescentou Jaqueline Lustosa.
