FAO cita Brasil como modelo na produção de bioenergia

Após três anos de pesquisas sobre impactos da produção de bioenergia, a Organização das Nações Unidas para Agricultura e Alimentação (FAO) divulgou no último dia (16) o “Marco analítico da bioenergia e segurança alimentar”. O estudo, segundo a instituição, apresenta uma nova metodologia que pode ajudar governos a avaliar os prós e contras de investimentos no setor. O Brasil é citado como exemplo de como um país pode usar a bioenergia para suprir suas necessidades energéticas.

Segundo a FAO, o estudo consiste em uma série de avaliações e respostas sobre questões importantes relacionadas com a viabilidade de desenvolvimento da bioenergia e seu impacto na oferta de alimentos e segurança alimentar das famílias. Também foram levadas em conta as dimensões social e ambiental.

"Nosso objetivo é ajudar as autoridades a tomar decisões, se o desenvolvimento da bioenergia é uma opção viável e, nesse caso, identificar as políticas que permitem maximizar os benefícios e minimizar os riscos”, afirmou o coordenador do projeto, Heiner Thofern.

Entre os fatores de incentivo que levam ao aumento da produção de bioenergia apresentados pela FAO, destacam-se as altas no preço do petróleo e a preocupação com a segurança energética, além das emissões de gases de efeito estufa dos combustíveis fósseis. A organização ressalta também que o investimento em bioenergia pode trazer melhorias à infraestrutura agrícola e ao transportes nas áreas rurais, criando empregos e aumentando a renda familiar.

A FAO cita o Brasil como exemplo de economia que usa a bioenergia para suprir as necessidades energéticas. “O país é o segundo produtor mundial de bioetanol e tem cerca de 1 milhão de veículos movidos pelo combustível procedente da cana-de-açúcar”, informa a instituição.

De acordo com a FAO, a Europa deve ser um mercado importante para as exportações dos produtos bioenergéticos, oferecendo novas oportunidades aos camponeses dos países em desenvolvimento. A instituição informa ainda que os estudos mostraram que os projetos de bioenergia de pequena escala, não voltados à exportação, também podem melhorar a segurança alimentar e ajudam a impulsionar as economias rurais.

Entre as desvantagens e preocupações sobre o setor estão o risco da expansão dos cultivos energéticos vir às custas de uma diminuição da produção de alimentos e aumento de seus preços, além de possíveis desmatamentos causadas pela conversão de novas terras e o impacto em populações indígenas.
