Brasil aposta na produção de biocombustíveis através de cana de açúcar

Testes realizados pela Universidade de São Paulo concluíram que a cana-de-açúcar pode alcançar uma produtividade de 4 000 litros de biodiesel por hectare, um número exponencialmente maior do que os 300 litros por hectares conseguidos através da soja, por exemplo.

A cana-de-açúcar é plantada em vários estados brasileiros, estimando-se em 5,5 milhões de hectares a área colhida em 2004 . São Paulo é o maior produtor nacional, com cerca de 60 por cento do total.

Durante quase meio século, o Brasil desenvoveu pesquisas sobre biocombustível, promoveu iniciativas para usos em testes e foi um dos pioneiros ao registar a primeira patente sobre o processo de produção de combustível, em 1980.

Em 2004, o Presidente Lula da Silva lançou oficialmente o Programa Nacional de Produção e Uso do Biodiesel (PNPB), que veio organizar a cadeia produtiva, definir as linhas de financiamento, estruturar a base tecnológica e criar a regulação.

Para estimular o processo, o executivo lançou o Selo Combustível Social, um conjunto de medidas cujo objectivo é estimular a inclusão social da agricultura na cadeia produtiva , através do acesso a melhores condições de financiamento.

Só em 2004/2005 foram gastos 16 milhões de reais (cerca de 7 milhões de euros) dos fundos sectoriais geridos pelo Ministério de Ciência e Tecnologia no desenvolvimento de pesquisas na área do biocombustível e os processo de produção industrial. Deste esforço nasceu a Rede Brasileira de Tecnologia de Biodiesel , constituída por 23 universidades do País, instituições como o Centro de Pesquisas da Petrobras, o Instituto Nacional de Tecnologia (INT) e o Pólo Nacional de Biocombustíveis.
