Morreu hoje às 10 horas da manhã o extrativista Zé Cláudio e sua esposa Maria do Espírito Santo, vítimas de uma emboscada em Nova Ipixuna, no Pará.

Quando o conheci, no TEDxAmazônia, evento que aconteceu em novembro, em Manaus, Zé Claudio contou um pouco do seu dia a dia. Era um homem simples. Naquela tarde ele vestia calça jeans e uma camiseta, era tranquilo, de fala mansa. Extrativista, vivia em Nova Ipixuna, no sul do Pará e sua rotina era marcada por uma luta quase corporal pela castanheira, árvore da qual tirava seu sustento. Às dez horas da manhã de hoje, foi morto a tiros em uma emboscada, no ramal que levava à sua casa. Morreu também sua mulher, Maria do Espírito Santo da Silva.

Graças às denúncias de José Cláudio Ribeiro da Silva, pelo menos 10 serrarias de castanheiras foram fechadas no ano passado na região, cinco delas em Nova Ipixuna. As árvores, protegidas por lei, têm sido insistentemente derrubadas por madeireiros e carvoeiros para produção de madeira e carvão vegetal. Serrarias já foram autuadas pelo Ibama por beneficiar madeira retirada ilegalmente do assentamento Praia Alta da Piranheira, onde ele morava. Não fica difícil concluir o tipo de pessoas que há tempos o ameaçavam na tentativa de calar suas denúncias. Após os tiros, disparados desde uma moto, cortaram um pedaço de sua orelha, em uma demonstração além de crueldade, “prova” do pistoleiro ao mandante que o “serviço foi cumprido”, algo comum no violento Pará.

"Já chegaram a oferecer 200 reais pela árvore da área dele, mas ele disse que não, que preferia continuar sobrevivendo dela em pé", conta Felipe Milanez, jornalista que viajou até Nova Ipixuna para falar com Zé Castanha, como ele também era conhecido. "Sou ameaçado de morte. Hoje estou aqui falando com você, amanhã posso não estar", me disse em Manaus. "E o senhor tem medo?". "Às vezes eu tenho, mas fazer o quê. Não posso deixar derrubar castanheira, ela é a minha vida". Meses atrás ele chegou a dizer que quando morresse, que seu corpo fosse cremado e enterrado aos pés de Majestade, maior castanheira de seu jardim, com 11 metros de diâmetro.

“Ele era uma pessoa incrível, lutador, muito inteligente. Tinha plena consciência do risco que vivia. Mas também sabia que a única coisa que poderia fazer era lutar e denunciar, mesmo que isso fizesse com que lhe tirassem a vida. Como veio a acontecer. Não pode, mais um crime desses na Amazônia, ficar impune”, diz Felipe. A pedido de Dilma Rousseff, o crime está sendo investigado pela Polícia Federal. Zé Castanha comparava sua luta a de Chico Mendes e, assim como ele, entrará para a história da Amazônia como um belo exemplo de coragem pela vida da floresta.
