Emissões batem recorde em 2010 e ameaçam meta de combate a aquecimento

As emissões internacionais de gases responsáveis pelo efeito estufa bateram um recorde histórico no ano passado, colocando em dúvida o cumprimento da meta de limitar o aquecimento global em menos de 2 graus, segundo informações divulgadas hoje (30) pela Agência Internacional de Energia (AIE).

Segundo a agência, as emissões de dióxido de carbono, o principal gás do efeito estufa, cresceram 5% no ano passado em relação ao recorde anterior, em 2008. Em 2009, as emissões haviam caído graças à crise financeira global, que reduziu a atividade econômica internacional.

A agência estimou ainda que 80% das emissões projetadas para 2020 no setor de energia já estão comprometidas, por virem de usinas elétricas atualmente instaladas ou em construção.

A meta de limitar o aumento global das temperaturas médias em 2 graus foi estabelecida durante a conferência da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) sobre mudanças climáticas realizada no ano passado em Cancún. O limite teve como base um relatório técnico que indicava que se a temperatura global aumentar mais de 2 graus, as consequências podem ser irreversíveis e devastadoras.

Segundo os cálculos da AIE, a quantidade de dióxido de carbono emitida no mundo atingiu 30,6 gigatoneladas no ano passado, um aumento de 1,6 gigatoneladas em relação ao ano anterior. A agência estimou que, para limitar o aquecimento dentro dos limites aceitáveis, as emissões globais não devem ultrapassar 32 gigatoneladas até 2020.

Se o crescimento das emissões neste ano igualar o do ano passado, o limite estabelecido será ultrapassado nove anos antes do prazo.

Segundo a AIE, os países considerados desenvolvidos foram responsáveis por 40% das emissões totais em 2010, mas responderam por apenas 25% do crescimento global das emissões.

Países em desenvolvimento, principalmente China e Índia, registraram um aumento muito maior de suas emissões, acompanhando seu crescimento econômico acelerado.

Quando consideradas as emissões per capita, porém, os países desenvolvidos tiveram uma emissão média de 10 toneladas por pessoa, enquanto na China foram 5,8 toneladas per capita e, na Índia, 1,5 tonelada.
