Comissão Europeia alerta para surto de bactéria encontrada em pepinos orgânicos

A Comissão Europeia informou nesta segunda, dia 30, que vários países do bloco registraram casos de contaminação pela bactéria Escherichia coli, mais conhecida por E. Coli. Já são 329 casos na Alemanha, 30 na Suécia, 11 na Dinamarca, dois na Áustria, dois na Holanda e três no Reino Unido. Pia Ahrenkilder Hansen, porta-voz da Comissão, disse que as autoridades "estão tentando de tudo para manter a situação sob controle" e tentam encontrar as origens do surto.

Na quinta, dia 26, a Comissão Europeia disse que pepinos orgânicos produzidos em duas províncias da Espanha foram os responsáveis pelo primeiro surto na Alemanha. Pepinos produzidos na Holanda e comercializados na Alemanha também estariam sob investigação. A Espanha nega que seus produtos sejam a origem da contaminação.

O governo alemão montou um gabinete de crise para controlar a disseminação da bactéria, que já teria matado 10 pessoas. A mídia local também fala em 1,2 mil pessoas contaminadas. O Instituto Robert Koch conta 329 casos de contaminação e três mortes. Por causa das mortes, os produtos foram apelidados de "pepinos assassinos" nos locais afetados.

A ministra de Consumo da Alemanha, Ilse Aigner, fará uma reunião de emergência nesta segunda com o ministro de Saúde, Daniel Bahr, e com representantes dos Estados alemães, para discutir o assunto. Não há confirmação oficial do governo alemão a respeito dos números, mas o Centro Europeu para Prevenção e Controle de Doenças, de Estocolmo (Suécia), descreveu o surto como um dos maiores do mundo, em se tratando de E.coli, e o maior já ocorrido na Alemanha.

A bactéria provoca diarreia, que pode evoluir para a chamada síndrome hemolítica urêmica (HUS, na sigla em inglês), que provoca diarreia hemorrágica e resulta em danos sérios ao fígado - o que, em alguns casos, leva à morte.

O presidente do Instituto Robert Koch, Reinhard Burger, disse que a fonte da contaminação ainda não foi identificada, mas pediu que a população, especialmente do norte da Alemanha, evite comer pepinos, tomates e alface.

Embora a Comissão Europeia tenha dito que os pepinos contaminados foram produzidos na Espanha, Burger afirmou que ainda é cedo para dizer, com certeza, qual é a fonte do surto. As informações são da Dow Jones.
